In a significant move towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP) has officially partnered with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Rivers State Council. This strategic collaboration aims to rapidly expand health insurance coverage across the state, with a specific focus on delivering affordable and qualitative healthcare services to underserved rural communities.
Bridging the Healthcare Gap in Rural Rivers State
The announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of RIVCHPP, Dr. Vetty Agala, during a strategic advocacy visit to the ALGON leadership. Dr. Agala emphasized that the partnership is crucial for identifying and registering vulnerable populations in all 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Rivers State. By leveraging ALGON’s extensive local government network, RIVCHPP aims to ensure that no resident is left behind due to geographical or financial barriers.
Dr. Agala highlighted that local government chairmen play an indispensable role in community mobilization. She noted that the goal is to bring healthcare directly to the people who need it most, and partnering with ALGON allows the programme to penetrate the grassroots effectively, ensuring that farmers, traders, and rural families gain access to health insurance schemes.
How the RIVCHPP-ALGON Partnership Works
The collaboration is designed to execute several key initiatives aimed at boosting healthcare accessibility at the local level:
- Grassroots Enrollment: Actively registering rural dwellers, particularly the vulnerable, aged, and pregnant women, into the state contributory health scheme.
- Infrastructure Utilization: Leveraging primary healthcare centers (PHCs) within the local governments to provide quality clinical services.
- Community Sensitization: Conducting joint awareness campaigns to educate rural residents on the benefits of health insurance and how to access care.
A Commitment to Sustainable Healthcare
Responding to the initiative, the leadership of ALGON, Rivers State Council, expressed its full support for the programme. The association committed to collaborating closely with RIVCHPP to fund and facilitate the enrollment of vulnerable citizens within their respective local government areas. This joint effort aligns perfectly with the state government’s health sector agenda, which prioritizes accessible, equitable, and sustainable healthcare services for all Rivers State residents.
By removing financial barriers through health insurance, this partnership represents a major milestone in reducing out-of-pocket health expenditures and improving the overall well-being of rural communities in Rivers State.
