By Ayo OnikoyiThe Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) has recommended Soul and Spirit Poetry of the Heart Plus More, a poetry collection by Joe Blaise Nnaemeka Akanazu, for general readership following an official assessment.
In a letter conveying the council’s decision, NERDC Executive Secretary, Salisu Shehu, stated that the book was found useful after evaluation and was therefore suitable for a broad audience.
According to the assessment report, the book met required standards in presentation and production, including its title, cover design, illustrations, and print quality. The council also found its language, style and overall content appropriate for its intended audience.
The collection, which features motivational and inspirational poems, was published in 2025 and unveiled in Owerri. Since its release, it has reportedly gained traction among schools, with some adopting it for use during assemblies and devotional activities.
Prior to the NERDC recommendation, the book had been approved by the Abia State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for use in junior secondary schools. It has also received endorsement from the Delta State Catholic Education Commission for use in Catholic schools.
Education stakeholders and reviewers have highlighted the book’s potential to support language development and creative expression among students. Former Imo State Commissioner for Education, Johncliff Nwadike, described it as impactful, while other reviewers noted its emphasis on moral and spiritual themes.
The author has linked the work to broader efforts aimed at promoting reading culture among young people. Through school-based poetry initiatives and competitions, Akanazu has continued to engage students, encouraging literary expression and participation.
The NERDC recommendation is expected to further boost the book’s visibility within educational circles, as institutions increasingly incorporate supplementary reading materials into learning and extracurricular activities.
