Renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana SAN has called on the federal government to withdraw and review the recent list of 175 individuals granted presidential pardons by President Bola Tinubu, following recommendations from the Prerogative of Mercy Committee headed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi SAN.
Falana noted that while the President is constitutionally empowered under Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution to grant pardons, reprieves, and commutations for offences created by Acts of the National Assembly, the current list contains several controversial names, including politically exposed persons, drug barons, armed robbers, terrorists, and individuals convicted of serious state offences such as culpable homicide, murder, and obtaining by false pretences.
He stressed that in the interest of justice and national morality, the list should be carefully reviewed, urging the Prerogative of Mercy Committee to recommend that state governors consider granting pardons for state-level offences in accordance with Section 212 of the Constitution.
