A landslide after torrential rain in Equatorial Guinea has killed a mother and her six children, rescue services said.

The bodies of two of the buried victims were recovered early on Friday, including that of the 36-year-old mother, who was eight months pregnant, an AFP journalist at the scene saw.

Witnesses said the landslide happened on Thursday when heavy rains fell on the city of Malabo.

“It was a concrete retaining wall that collapsed onto their wooden house, followed by a landslide,” neighbour Dominica Ada said.

“The mother and her six children were all inside,” she added.

Government representatives and the archbishop of Malabo, formerly the capital, have travelled to the site to express their condolences and support the rescuers.
