More Nigerians are being tricked into paying millions of naira for non-existent jobs in the United Kingdom through the skilled worker visa system.
An investigative report published by Sky News on Wednesday revealed how migrants were made to pay huge sums of money to get into the UK only to be stranded upon arrival.
A Nigerian whom the Sky News spoke with shared that she had paid someone in Nigeria £10,000, an equivalent of N9.7 million, to get her a carer job in Britain.

She led a more dignified lifestyle while she was in Nigeria but now has to depend on a food bank for support.
“I’ve always provided for myself. I’m a very hard-working, diligent person. So for me to be here depending on people to eat coming to the food bank to get food isn’t ok with me. I don’t feel happy about it,” she told Sky News.
“It makes me feel I’m less of a person. I should be in a position of helping not receiving aid because this is not who I was back in my country.”
The Nigerian shared that she didn’t apply for the job herself because there were so many fraudulent agents in Nigeria and no one knew which travel agent was genuine.
“I would have done it myself but there are so many frauds on the internet in Nigeria you don’t know what’s real,” she explained.
The Nigerian stated that besides herself, there were dozens of people who had migrated to the UK via the skilled worker visa who were homeless and had nowhere to go.

Another Nigerian whom the outlet also shared her story had sold everything she owned in Nigeria to move to Britain but became stranded after she found out that her offer of a full time job as a carer was fake.
People of other nationalities including Pakistani and Bangladeshi migrants have had to face hardships since migrating to the UK too.
The Home Office of the United Kingdom, however, stated that it would not tolerate an abuse of its immigration system and that adequate measures would be put in place to ensure compliance.
