SSS Recaptures Top Ansaru Commander Abdulazeez Obadaki, Mastermind Of 2012 Okene Church Attack

The Department of State Services (DSS) has re-arrested Abdulazeez Obadaki, a top commander of the Ansaru terrorist group, believed to have orchestrated the August 7, 2012 attack on worshippers at a Deeper Life Bible Church near Okene, Kogi State.
The attack claimed the lives of at least 19 worshippers, including the pastor, after three gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles stormed the church during an evening service.
Security sources revealed that Obadaki also coordinated attacks on five commercial banks in Uromi, Edo State, months after the Okene shooting. He had previously been arrested but escaped during the July 2022 jailbreak at the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja, having confessed to playing a central role in planning the escape after being transferred from Kabba Custodial Centre in June 2022.
DSS operatives, acting on a “well-oiled intelligence operation,” tracked and recaptured the fugitive popularly known as Bomboy on Friday morning, ending more than three years of his evasion of security agencies.
The breakthrough comes just two months after the DSS arraigned five suspects linked to the 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, which left dozens dead and many injured.
The February 2022 daylight attacks on several banks in Uromi, attributed to Obadaki’s network, resulted in the deaths of policemen and bank customers, while hundreds of millions of naira were reportedly stolen, causing widespread fear in the region.
In recent months, the DSS has intensified operations nationwide, recording numerous arrests of terrorists, violent criminals, and their financiers, with the agency’s new leadership fast-tracking prosecutions for all suspects currently in custody.
