Tenants at 5, Association Avenue, Ilupeju, Lagos, have accused the landlord of Vivastar Nigeria Limited of using officers of the Nigeria Police Force to intimidate and harass them in an attempt to evict them without due process.
According to tenants, who spoke to Vanguard, the situation escalated on June 3, 2025, when a police officer from the Zonal Oracle Unit, Zone 2, Onikan, Lagos, allegedly confronted three tenants, including Mr Vincent Uba, pressuring them to sign an agreement in the presence of both the property’s selling and buying lawyers.
Uba stated, “We were pressured to sign the agreement in the presence of one Funmilayo, representing Adeola & Adeola Chambers. The document ordered us to vacate the premises within two weeks, allowing the new buyers to begin bringing in construction materials.”
He added that on June 4, contractors were seen bringing in concrete blocks into the premises.
“I refused to sign the document, which caused a delay in my release that day. Now, I am concerned about my personal safety, as dangerous-looking men have been loitering around the compound daily.
“Our lives are being threatened. This is no longer just about an eviction, it’s about our security,” Uba lamented.
He further revealed that on June 20, 2025, agents of the new owners, accompanied by a truckload of labourers, attempted to invade his apartment and possibly remove his belongings and forcibly evict his family.
“But for the intervention of neighbours, the attempt would have succeeded. Again, just today(yesterday), about 9a.m., three policemen entered the compound and arrested some individuals present on the premises, taking them to an undisclosed police station.
“Barely 20 minutes after the police left, four persons arrived, claiming they had come to inspect the building with some equipment. From all indications, those arrests were carried out to pave the way for these individuals.”
Uba explained that the dispute is already a subject of litigation before two courts, Magistrate Court, presided over by Magistrate Ejiro Kubeyinje, and a Federal High Court, where a fundamental human rights suit is before Justice C. Aneke.
