Two weeks after the tragic death of Olaoluwa Lawal, a vibrant, promising actor and breadwinner of his family, silence still looms. The relevant authorities and industry bodies who should speak or act have chosen to look the other way. This isn’t just disappointing — it’s inhumane.
Ola’s death occurred while on a movie set — under conditions that raise serious questions. There were no safety measures in place. No villagers or emergency assistance were on ground at that odd hour of 10pm. No divers. No support system. He was left to die — a death that could have been avoided.
Even more disturbing, hours after Ola passed away, filming continued on that same set as though nothing happened. This is not just disrespect — it’s a blatant disregard for human life. Till today, the producer of the film “Evil in Me,” Bola Akande, has not issued any public statement. Not an acknowledgment. Not an expression of sympathy. Nothing. And she only visited Ola’s grieving father ten days after his death, without offering answers — only complaints about seeing his pictures everywhere on social media.
This silence is not only deafening — it is suspicious.
We call on the Nigerian Police Force to immediately open an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ola’s death. There must be accountability. We also call on all relevant film industry guilds, including the Association of Movie Producers (AMP), Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), and the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) to break their silence and act. This is not the time for politics or PR. This is a matter of human life.
To make matters worse, the production team has yet to formally visit Ola’s family, despite the tragic loss occurring on their set. What message are we sending to other young creatives? That their lives don’t matter?
Ola Lawal was more than just an actor — he was a son, a brother, a breadwinner, a creative genius whose light was dimmed far too soon. He deserves more than this cold silence. We will not be silenced. We will continue to demand justice, accountability, and a proper burial for Ola.
This is not just about one actor. This is about human decency. About conscience. About setting a precedent that this kind of reckless neglect will no longer be tolerated.
