*Govt Must Address Insecurity, Corruption, and Injustice, Not Just Prevent Protests
In a recent post on his Facebook wall, former NBA President Chief Joseph Bodurin Daudu, SAN, asserted that the planned August 1st, 2024 protests against ‘Bad Governance’ have already achieved their objective, even before taking place.
Daudu argued that the Tinubu Government’s massive response and propaganda against the threat of protests have drawn more attention to the inefficacy of the government’s response to the economic hardships faced by Nigerians than any protest could have done.
Daudu pointed out that various groups, including religious clerics, youth organizations, and government employees, have declared their non-participation in the planned protests. He suggested that this collective lethargy and reluctance to protest may have been induced by factors left unsaid, likely at a significant financial cost.
While acknowledging that the present economic travails did not start in the past 12 months, Daudu maintained that the current government should be held vicariously liable for the hardships imposed on Nigerians, as governance is a continuum. He cautioned the government against being too quick to celebrate quashing the legitimate move to draw attention to the nation’s hardships, as the real danger lies in unexpected protests that may arise from within the government itself.
Daudu emphasized that the government has not provided a clear plan on how it intends to address the pressing issues of crippling insecurity, economic hardships, corruption, and injustice. He called on the public to continue holding the government accountable by demanding solutions to these problems, rather than accepting the current window dressing.
In conclusion, the former NBA President stressed that the principles of the protest remain in place, and the protest has achieved its objective by highlighting the government’s inadequate response to the nation’s challenges.
